History and evolution of orthodontics

Have you ever wondered how braces came about? Probably, if at some point in your life you have needed to wear them, you have not liked that experience very much. However, if you are familiar with their evolution, you will surely be surprised by how far they have come. From the first ineffective brackets in 1728, to modern mini-implants and digital orthodontics, technology has enabled great advances in correcting dental alignment. Want to know more? Read on!

Today we propose to talk about the history of braces starting from the beginning. Braces were invented in 1728, but the approach was inefficient. It was not until 1910 when orthodontist Edward Angle developed much more effective and comfortable brackets to correct dental alignment. These instruments were attached to the teeth with cement and connected with arch wires, modifying the initial position of the teeth.

Since then, the orthodontic industry has evolved at breakneck speed. Brackets have gone from metal brackets to white ceramic brackets, or even invisible brackets. The latter is achieved thanks to the Invisalign© technique, which uses a series of transparent splints that progressively move your teeth. You won't even notice you're wearing them!

But that's not all! The evolution of orthodontics has also advanced in the digital field. Digital orthodontics is a technique that consists of making a 3D scan of the patient's teeth, thus allowing greater precision when placing the brackets. In addition, this method is much more comfortable, since it is not necessary to take molds of the patient's mouth.

And as if this were not enough, the technology applied to orthodontics has also allowed the creation of mini-implants. These elements are placed in the patient's mouth and allow a more effective fixation of the brackets, thus accelerating the process of dental correction. Incredible!

Mini-implants

Mini-implants, also known as micro-screws or temporary skeletal anchors, are small titanium structures that are placed in the jaw and allow brackets to be properly fixed, which speeds up the dental correction process. Mini-implants are very useful in cases where there are no teeth to support the brackets, or when the teeth are too small or are not in the proper position to be used as anchorage.

Mini-implants are also used in lingual orthodontics, a technique that consists of placing the brackets on the inside of the teeth, which makes them completely invisible. In these cases, the brackets are fixed with the mini-implants, which also allows for greater precision and faster results.

For their placement, a small surgical intervention is required, since they are inserted into the jaw bone, but it is a simple procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. In general, mini-implants are very well tolerated by patients, have a maximum duration of about six months to a year, and their placement and subsequent removal does not affect oral health.

It is important to note that the placement of mini-implants must be performed by a specialist in orthodontics, as it is a procedure that requires very specific knowledge, both for the planning of the placement and for its insertion.

As you can see, the technological evolution in orthodontics has allowed great advances in the correction of dental alignment. At Nou Dent Clinics we are always committed to the latest technological advances in order to offer you the best possible service. And finally, one more curiosity: Did you know that September 9 is celebrated as Orthodontist's Day? Perhaps we should begin to pay tribute to them a little more for their work and dedication!
